Tis the season for turkey dinners, high school playoff football, Chrismas carols, and night walleye fishing along the shores of Lake Erie.  I’ve been out twice in the last few days, and both times we’ve been able to raise ole’ marble eyes from the dark Erie waters.

Last night Julia, Becky, and I launched off of Vermillion around 10pm.  We wanted to get out earlier, but there were some really good football games on (Ignatius lost, boooo! hell of a game though).  The bite has been best in the few hours just after darkness, but we all know they bite all night long.   The problem we had though, is that Becky, who could get sea sick in the bath tub,  was so excited about her first trip night walleye fishing, she forgot to take her Dramamine.  It didn’t take long for her to start chumming Cheese-Its and Chili in the Lake to the walleyes.   The good news is that it seemed to turn on the walleyes, and we were 2 for 2 with a 6 and 9lber after her first 2 ‘chums’.    However, after the 3rd chum, there wasn’t a whole lot of volume to it, and it wasn’t enough to trigger another bite.   We decided it was probably best to head home with a pair of nice walleyes.

Husky jerks HJ14s have caught all of our fish the last few days.  We’re rigging them 15-35 feet behind Off Shore planner boards, like the one pictured below.  It seems most of the active fish are hanging in the drop off from 15-20′ of water just to west of the Vermillion River.  Good luck if you get out, this is a great time of year and we have a great weather forecast coming up.
