Well, I finally got the boat all rigged up and some time off, so I managed to get in a few charters over the last couple weeks. The fishing did not disappoint…
There are some massive fish from Lorain all the way out East past Cleveland, and when the weather cooperates, it might just be my favorite time of year to fish… The one day, our 4 man limit of 24 fish weighed 161lbs at the cleaners, you do the math. The fish are close to shore, huge, will eat spinners or crankbaits, and the junk fish aren’t too bad. The next month or so should remain awesome fishing in the area.
It seems the fish are still concentrated in that 30-40′ range and in the mid to lower water column. Flicker Minnows and Reef Runners with a 2 oz Off Shore Tackle Guppy weight about 20′ in front and 70-90′ back has been real hot; pink lemonade being a favorite color. I got a spinner bite going a few days that was off the hook; 3 oz weights 35-45 back and dipsys the same lead with copper or gold blades — ridiculous. As the migration continues eastward, expect lots of big hungry walleyes to find structure and current seems and leave the main migration pack behind as they make their homes for the remainder of summer in that 10-25′ range. We will be going to battle with these fish with bottom bouncers and light inline weights. The sandbar off Lorain should load up in no time as well.
My schedule for most of June is in Atlanta for simulator training on the Boeing 757, but I will be making periodic jumps home and definitely be getting the Starcraft wet. Good luck if you get out, the fishing is awesome!
