While on a little break on tournaments here, I had the opportunity to take George Noleff fromk news channel 5 on on a trip as he was doing a story on the Lake Erie walleye fishery.  What a trip we had, and story George made of it!   We started off in Lorain on a choppy morning with winds out of the North.  George told me he wanted to see some differnent techniques, catch some fish, and discuss the walleye fishery.

We started off pulling crank baits with 2 oz snap weights 80-120′ back at 1.6mph.  That put our baits in the 25-35′ down range.  We had marked some fish good fish near the bottom in 40′ of water on the Lowrance HDS Touch.   This was the area we were targeting.  Not 5 IMG_1891minutes in, a planner board goes back and we popped a nice 9lber.  We continued on this pass and had good action for the next hour and a half of so, while George was filming.  The #9 berkley flicker minnow was on fire, I can’t wait to get my hands on some more of these, what a bait!

We had some real nice footage and fish from this first pass, so we decided to switch gears and see if we could catch them pulling spinners.  Ran up for another pass, switched over to #2 tadpoles, a dipsy, and 2oz keel weights with colorado blades.  Again, we were targeting these same fish in the lower 1/3rd of the water column, typically where the big girls hang this time of year.  The spinners worked, but not quite as good as the cranks.  We decided to try something else just to see what we could pull up.  I say, “Lets go try some of the skinny water along the shoreline in 10-20′.”  This is one of my favorite ways to catch them pulling spinners, and often over looked.  Nothing happening in there, as there wasn’t enough current and this bite thrives on current in the Lake.

George put together a great piece and story that aired a few days ago that you can check out here…

I’ve had several charters the last few weeks from the islands to Lorain and the fishing had been fantastic.  Lots of limits, or near limits, and some big fish!  North Bass and Kelleys area are on fire with great eater fish with a few trophies mixed in like the one pictured below.  We had a banner day in 10-20′ of water in one of my Islands honey holes last week, and the Lorain area is loaded with trophy 8-10lb + fish as you can see from George’s story.  I am pretty much booked up for June, but call or email if you are interested, I may be able to squeeze you in somewhere or set something up in July.  Expect the bite to heat up big time in the next couple weeks from Avon to Cleveland!IMG_1916
